Christopher Nolan’s tribute to Heath Ledger

“Heath was bursting with creativity. It was in his every gesture. He once told me that he liked to wait between jobs until he was creatively hungry. Until he needed it again. He brought that attitude to our set every day. There aren’t many actors who can make you feel ashamed of how often you complain about doing the best job in the world. Heath was one of them.” -Christopher Nolan

Director of Heath Ledger’s last film (The Dark Knight) Christopher Nolan wrote a tribute to the fallen actor in Newsweek. The article provides a lot of people who’ve admired Heath with a sense of comfort and a feeling of goodness after what has been a long and tiring week remembering the dearly beloved actor. In the article, Nolan tells us how he once invited Heath onto the set of The Dark Knight on his day-off to come and see what they were upto. Heath shows up on a skateboard which was being used by the more younger members of Nolan’s crew. Nolan mistaking Heath for one of his skateboarding crew members, asks his assistant director to get him out of his line of sight and looks up to find that Heath had taken up on his offer.

Earlier this week, winner of Screen Actors’ Guild award Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his win to the late Heath Ledger. He said he had never met Heath but he had given him a sense of ‘re-generation’ as an actor. He had also mentioned Heath’s powerful performances in the films Monster’s Ball (2002) and Brokeback Mountain (2005).

With his last film slated for a July release and the fact that it is expected to be one of the greatest performances in the history of Batman and mainstream Hollywood is not going to help. I personally think his absence is being felt very dearly everywhere and that it will take a lot of time to get used to.
