Friday Night Limited, Opening Edition

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Welcome to the first edition of Broken Projector’s brand new series ‘Friday Night Limited’. From henceforth every Friday, Broken Projector will feature a special edition which will discuss a particular cinematic theme and bring together the best of the web’s resources on it.

Remembering the Master

What better way to start off the opening edition than by remembering one of cinema’s most well respected filmmakers. This edition is dedicated to the master Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu.

Yasujiro Ozu is the visionary behind such Japanese classics as Tokyo Story (1959), An Autumn Afternoon (1962), Early Spring Floating Weeds (1959) and The End of Summer (1961). He is known for his simplistic story-telling skills and his unmatched compassion towards the human-kind. His stories dealt with the everyday routine lives of the ordinary Japanese citizens of the 1950s and 1960s and their emotional journey through their relationships and the choices they make. The great German filmmaker Wim Wenders had cited Ozu as his greatest inspiration and often refers to him as his ‘master’. Wenders had also made a documentary film about Ozu called Tokyo-Ga (1985), in which Wenders travels to Japan and re-visits the spirit of the great filmmaker.

Ozu was born on December 12th, 1903 in the Fukagawa district of Tokyo. He made most of his films for Shochiku studios. Yasujiro Ozu passed away on December 12th, 1963- his sixtieth birthday.

In 2002, Sight and Sound magazine conducted a poll among over 200 critics, writers and filmmakers on a world-wide scale. They had voted Ozu’s film Tokyo Story (1959) as the fifth greatest film ever made. Shochiku studios produced the film Café Lumière in 2003 to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Ozu. It was directed by Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-Hsien.

This opening edition of Friday Night Limited on Broken Projector celebrates the 104th birth anniversary of the great master.
